Tragedy struck a young Sri Lankan-Canadian family from Toronto, last Sunday morning. Jayantha Neil Wijeratne, 49, his wife Antonette, 50, and only daughter Eleesha, 16, were returning home from a road trip and holiday to Florida when a suspected drunk driver going the wrong way on Highway 427 slammed head-on into their Dodge mini-van killing father and daughter.

As part of Asian Heritage Month festivities, The Honourable Gordon O'Connor, Chief Government Whip and Minister of State and Visita Leelaratna, founder and Chairman of Sirin, participated in the opening of the Sirin Art Exhibition on May 26, 2012 at Lion Dick Brûlé Community Centre, in Kanata. Bhante Kovida grew up on the tropical island of Jamaica, West Indies, of Chinese descent. He immigrated to Canada, studied for a science degree, then traveled overland from Europe to India and Nepal (via Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan) during 1974-1975, where he began the study of Indian history and culture, Hatha Yoga and meditation, classical Indian music, and Buddhism.
The Sirin Research Centre held an event entitled Power of Balance: Creating a balance in our lives in an unbalanced world on March 11th, 2012 at the Cambodian Buddhist Temple located at 5883 Hazeldean Road in Stittsville, Ontario, Canada. Sirin’s prime objective is to help the world to become a safe, secure and place of harmony and peace by connecting people to each other and helping them lead peaceful lives. In his speech, Sirin's Chairman, Visita Leelaratna proclaimed that "together we are strong" adding that he was very happy with the progress of Sirin’s initiatives Connecting with People of diverse cultural backgrounds.
The Sirin Foundation held an event entitled “Sirin Friendship Day: Connecting with Sri Lankans” on February 14th, 2011 at Dhamma Ukthikaramaya Temple in Ambalangoda. The Sirin Foundation is committed to a number of charitable activities in Sri Lanka. The Foundation offers less fortunate students well-supervised financial assistance and a positive learning environment that engenders success and economic stability.
To mark the New Year, the Ottawa - Hull Cambodian Buddhist Association invited the Sri Lankan community in the National Capital Region, to celebrate the Cambodian and Sri Lankan civilizations that are over 2500 years old. This joint Cambodia - Sri Lanka 2012 New Year celebration was a tremendous success.
