Ex-SC councilman pleading guilty to tax evasion
The longest-serving city councilman in South Carolina's capital is set to plead guilty to federal tax evasion charges.
Court documents show former Columbia City Councilman E.W. Cromartie II is expected to change his plea Monday in federal court in Columbia.Last month, Cromartie admitted failing to pay more than $25,000 in federal income taxes. His plea agreement shows Cromartie also admitted making more than $200,000 in cash deposits and withdrawals just below the IRS minimums for transaction reporting requirements.Cromartie could face up to 25 years in prison. But both he and prosecutors agree that a sentence of one year and one day would be appropriate.Cromartie has resigned. He served on the Columbia City Council for more than 25 years.
