Investigators say a Belton police officer has been suspended without pay after he was charged with assault and kidnapping.

The Greenville News reports that 42-year-old David Surratt was charged Saturday morning after a fight at a woman's home.

According an arrest report, a 34-year-old woman said she was held against her will and was bruised on her arm while she and Surratt argued over an ex-boyfriend.

Surratt was being held at the Anderson city jail Sunday. A phone message left at the jail was not immediately returned.

Belton police Capt. Robert Yarborough told the newspaper that Surratt was hired a year ago and the department would be conducting an internal investigation.
