Eelam People’s Democratic Party (EPDP) leader Douglas Devananda yesterday said that President Ranil Wickremesinghe has the ability to guide Sri Lanka through this tumultuous time.

“Sri Lanka is facing the worst economic and political crisis since independence and Wickremesinghe can guide the country through this. This is our sincere belief, and we will support him fully,” he said.

Devananda said that all parties must unite and help the government to lift Sri Lanka out of the crisis.

“Tamil people must think carefully about the choices before them. They need to realize that by helping the government to stabilize the economy, they can achieve their aspirations,” he said.

The EPDP leader said that the Tamil people have voted in some politicians who do not care about the wellbeing of the people.

“The actions of these politicians have destroyed an opportunity for the Tamils. Unlike them, we are thinking about the future, our policies revolve around peace, reconciliation and development,” he said.

Devananda, and the leader and the only parliamentarian of the Tamil People’s National Alliance, C.V. Vigenswaran, were the only Northern politicians that supported Wickremesinghe in his bid to become President. The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) voted for Dullas Alahapperuma and the Tamil National People’s Front (TNPF) refrained from voting.
