Sri Lanka Customs seizes gold biscuits, drugs worth over 450 mn rupees
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s Customs Department has seized contraband including narcotics worth a total of 450 million rupees in less than 24 hours.
A statement said 9.5kg gold biscuits and 5kg of cocaine were seized on Wednesday August 17.
The department detained 9.5kg of gold biscuits valued at 205 million rupees attempted to be smuggled into the island.
Two people have been arrested over the gold biscuits, the statement said, adding that one of the arrested was an employee of a prominent airport shop while the other was a passenger who had arrived from Dubai.
The incident is being investigated by officers attached to the Narcotics Control Unit of Sri Lanka Customs at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), the statement said.
Meanwhile on Tuesday August 16 a Polish national was arrested by the Narcotics Control Unitfor possessing and concealing 5kg of cocaine in their baggage.
The narcotics had been concealed in fax paper rolls for fax machines. The value of the seized drugs came to 245 million rupees, the Customs Department said in its statement.
The passenger had arrived from Colombia via Doha on August 14. The suspect and the seized narcotics have been handed over to the Police Narcotics Bureau for further investigation. (Colombo/Aug17/2022)
