Sri Lanka’s Sapugaskanda oil refinery to run for 40-days with two oil shipments
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s breakdown-prone sole oil refinery Sapugaskanda will be able run at full capacity for 40-days with two 100,000 metric tonnes crude oil shipments, Minister for Power and Energy has said.
The Ceylon Petroleum Corporation has recieved a 100,000 metric tonne crude oil cargo on August 20 and the refinery has commecned operatations.
A second 120,000 metric tonne crude oil shipment is expected on the following week.
“CPC Refinery commenced operations today (August 20). 100,000 MTs of crude oil is being discharged & expect to have the 2nd crude oil cargo of 120,000 MTs next week. With the 2 Cargos the refinery will be able to operate at full capacity for 40 days,” Kanchana Wijesekera, the Minister for Power and Energy said in a Tweet on August 20.
“Jet Fuel cargo will be unloaded tonight.”
However the refinery does not produce the premium range of fuel – Super Diesel, 95 Petrol or any other Premium Products.
It produces Auto Diesel, 92 Petrol, Heavy Fuel Oil/Furnace Oil, Jet Fuel/Kerosine, Naptha, LPG, Bitumen.

The refinery has mostly remained closed since late 2021 due to technical faults and the fuel shortage in the country.
