Former Army Chief jailed for 3 years

Sarath Fonseka, the former army Chief who led the Sri Lankan Army to completely wipe out the LTTE has been jailed for three years for implicating the government in war crimes.

The court has ruled out that he lent credence to allegations the defence secretary ordered Tamil Tigers to be killed as they tried to surrender in May 2009.

However the 3 member bench has been divided over the decision with one judge not agreeing with the judgement.

Reacting to the verdict, Fonseka has said that he did not accept the judgment.

Fonseka, one of Sri Lanka’s most decorated soldiers is already serving 30 months following a Court Martial found him guilty of breaching arms procurement while on active service.
