Mayor for Hikkaduwa remanded for bribery charges

The Mayor for the UPFA controlled Hikaduwa Municipal council, Winni Kariyawasam was remanded today for an allegation of  bribery.

The Mayor is reported to have taken a bribe of  Rs 630,000 to award a contract to put up street lights in the Hikkaduwa area in 2006.

The complaint was lodged by a UNP member Sudath Lokuge.

The suspect was remanded by Colombo Chief Magistrate Rashmi Singappuli until December 9.
