Five people injured in prison escape attempt

Five people including three prison guards have received injuries yesterday in an escape attempt by three inmates in Galle Prison, the police said.
An inmate and two prisoners in remand custody at the Galle Prison had attempted to escape from the prison assaulting a prison guard early last morning.

According to the police the prison officers had opened fire at the fleeing prisoners preventing the escape.  However three prison officers have received severe injuries when the guards and inmates clashed following the escape attempt, the police have said. All five injured people are being treated at the Karapitiya Hospital.
