Former Procter & Gamble MD Gurcharan Das to address Sri Lanka Economic Summit 2012

Gurcharan Das, the author of the international bestseller, ‘India Unbound’ is scheduled address the Sri Lanka Economic Summit 2012 to be held from 10 to 12 July, at the Cinnamon Grand. Das will address the inauguration ceremony of the Sri Lanka Economic Summit on the evening of 10 July. His address is titled ‘Are there lessons for Sri Lanka for the experiences of the SAARC countries?’ The keynote speech at the event will be delivered by World Bank South Asia Region Chief Economist Kalpana Kochhar.

A world renowned author, his book India Unbound is a narrative account of India from Independence to the global information age, and has been published in 17 languages and filmed by BBC. He is also well known for his work ‘The Difficulty of Being Good: On the subtle art of dharma’ (Penguin 2009) which interrogates the epic, Mahabharata, in order to answer the question, ‘why be good?’ He writes a regular column on Sundays for the Times of India and other papers and periodic guest columns for the Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Foreign Affairs, and Newsweek.
Das graduated with honors from Harvard University in Philosophy, Politics and Sanskrit. He later attended Harvard Business School (AMP). He was CEO of Procter & Gamble India and later Managing Director, Procter & Gamble Worldwide (Strategic Planning). In 1995, he took early retirement to become a full time writer. He is currently on the boards of a number of companies and is a regular speaker to the top managements of the world’s largest corporations. His other literary works include a novel, ‘A Fine Family’, a book of essays, ‘The Elephant Paradigm’, and an anthology ‘Three English Plays’.
Similar to Das, the 13th Sri Lanka Economic Summit is expected to bring together a cross section of internationally acclaimed academics, policy makers, cabinet ministers, key government officials, private sector leaders, representatives of international organisations and top corporate personnel in the country to discuss a strategy to effectively position Sri Lanka in the global economy in this Asian Century.
