National Anti-Drug Drive’s Door-to-Door Awareness campaign carries message across nation
The National Anti-Drug Drive’s Door-to-Door Awareness Campaign by News 1st, Sirasa and Shakthi, which is aimed at rallying the people to create a drug-free nation, got underway in several areas of the Southern Province on July 5.
This initiative is being carried out in collaboration with the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board and the Sri Lanka Police. The programme, organised under the theme “Drugs Have No Place in Me, My Home, and My Country,” is being held across three districts of the Southern Province.
One phase of the programme was held in the Mirissa and Kamburugamuwa areas of the Matara District on July 5. Members of the News 1st staff with the assistance of the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board and the Police went from door to door creating awareness among the people on the effects of drugs.
Assistant Divisional Secretary for Weligama, Thakshila Sugathapala stated that people loose what is important in life because of substance abuse and creating awareness and spreading the message is the best way to change society as well as a persons in life.
Those who have fallen victim to substance abuse were directly met by our team and were educated on its ill effects before being directed to rehabilitation programmes.
Another phase of the National Anti Drug Drive programme was held in the Kalegana and Dadalla areas in Galle on July 5, where a group of officials of the News 1st staff, the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board and the Police were present for the programme. A special feature of the door to door programme held in Galle was where our team met this youth. Our efforts to convince one youth who is a victim of heroin addiction were successful, as he made the decision to let go of his addiction.
With the intervention of officials of the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board, the youth was given the necessary guidance for rehabilitation, marking a testament to the success of the programme.
The National Anti-Drug Drive’s Door-to-Door Awareness Campaign was also held in the Tangalle and Ambalantota areas of the Hambantota District. During the door to door campaign, our team was able to meet with substance abusers and even those who had previously been involved in drug peddling. Many were highly appreciative of this programme being carried out by Newsfirst, Sirasa and Shakthi together with the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board and the Police.
A female monk stated regarding the campaign that the institutions are doing great service and that she hopes and prays they will find the strength to put a stop to the use of drugs and alcohol.
The National Anti-Drug Drive’s Door-to-Door awareness campaign, which concluded its journey in the Southern part of the country, will recommence in the Central Province next week.
