Credentials presented to the new Chief Prelate of Asgiri Chapter

The presenting of credentials to the new Chief Prelate of the Asgiri Chapter was held on Monday, July 6, under the auspices of President Maithripala Sirisena. The state event commenced following religious observances.

The Chief Prelate of the Asgiri Chapter, the Most Venerable Galama Sri Aththadassi Thera, was presented credentials July 6 afternoon at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. The Maha Sangha led by the Chief Prelates and Ministers and MP’s led by the Prime Minister, also graced the occasion. The credentials were presented to the Chief Prelate by the Head of State, following an age-old tradition.

Speaking at the state event, Head of State President Maithripala Sirisena stated that throughout history, the respected Maha Sangha, in times of strife, rioting and other troubles, have worked to build unity and friendship among the people and to maintain a unitary country and unitary state. He also noted that at the same time, throughout the reigns of the various kings and the ministers, the respected Maha Sangha has provided guidance and consultation for the betterment of the country. The president also added that the Maha Sangha have always been at the forefront of the task.

President Sirisena also noted that he continues to hope the Maha Sangha will use sacred positions for the betterment of the country, for peace to maintain a disciplined country and also for the betterment of the global community.
