Ranil Wickremesinghe elected President

Ranil Wickremesinghe was elected President by Parliament today securing 134 votes.

MP Dullas Alahapperuma secured 82 votes while MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake secured just 03 votes.

Of the 225 members of Parliament 223 had cast their votes of which four were declared invalid.

Ranil Wickremesinghe, National Peoples Power (NPP) Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake and MP Dullas Alahapperuma had been nominated for President.

The three names were nominated when Parliament convened yesterday.

Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa withdrew from the presidential race and decided to support MP Dullas Alahapperuma for the post.

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Leader Dinesh Gunawardena nominated Ranil Wickremesinghe, MP Vijitha Herath nominated Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa nominated Dullas Alahapperuma. (Colombo Gazette)
