Sri Lanka to fully implement QR code system in fuel rationing from Aug. 1

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka will commence total implementation of the QR system for fuel rationing from August 1 while canceling the existing last number system, the Ministry of Power and Energy has announced.

The Last Digit system, token system and other systems put in place to manage Sri Lanka’s fuel crisis will no longer be in use from Monday (1).

A Ministry statement said that users unable to register vehicles with the chassis number will be able to register with the Revenue License from Sunday (31).

All three wheelers have been asked to register their vehicles at their respective police stations and nominate their filling station of choice. The move comes after three wheel drivers have been accused of a “fuel mafia,” selling fuel in the black market, and making the country’s debilitating fuel crisis even worse. They have also been accused of long fuel queues and causing scuffles at filling stations.

Several fights have broken out in fuel queues, resulting in at least two death since the queues started in April this year.

The Ministry has requested that the public send in video or photo evidence of fuel related black market activities to a designated Whatsapp number (0742123123) to crack down on buyers and sellers of black market fuel.

“QR Access will be temporarily blocked for repeated offenders and legal action to be taken accordingly,” the Ministry said in its statement.

According to the statement, fuel distribution will be prioritised for fuel stations that use the National Fuel Pass QR system, and the system will be monitored check the number of users of the code with the distributed stocks.

The Ministry urged users of generators, garden equipment and other machinery that require fuel to register with the type of fuel, weekly fuel requirement and choice of fuel station with the relevant Divisional Secretariat.

As of Friday (29) 931 fuel stations island-wide had adopted the QR system, and 4.6 million vehicles had registered for the Fuel Pass. (Colombo/July 30/2022)
