Sri Lanka private bus owners expect to operate at 90 pct as schools reopen

ECONONOMYNEXT – With Sri Lanka set to reopen schools for all five days of the week, private bus operators plan to have at least 90 percent of all available buses back on the roads, Private Bus Owners’ Association President Gemunu Wijeratne said.

“The government has announced that schools will be open five days of the week. We plan to commence bus services 100 percent islandwide. If not 100 percent, at least 90 percent should be doable,” said Wijeratne.

Private bus operations were hampered by a crippling fuel crisis that saw miles-long queues snaking around urban centres around the country as vehicle owners lined up for limited supplies of fuel.

A national fuel pass that uses a QR code for allocating fuel quotas has considerably eased the queues, and the government has announced that school education – interrupted at first by the pandemic and then the fuel crisis – will finally resume at full capacity starting next week.
