Sri Lanka to open new universtities to improve higher education

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka President Ranil Wickremesinghe has said he will open several new universities including in Kurunegala and Batticaloa and private institutions such as NIBM and SLIIT to be given national status to speed up the country’s higher education system.

President Wickremesinghe had met the students of his Alma Mater Royal College and discussed the education system in the country, student migration and bullying in state universities, a statement from the Department of Information said.

The students who met the President had told him that degrees in foreign universities are much faster to obtain than in state universities.

He has said that the students will be given the opportunity to finish their education in state universities within a stipulated period of time.

The President had also mentioned that the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Colombo will be made into a separate campus and the National School of Business Management (NSBM) and the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT) will be given the status of national universities.
