Lochana and Gayathri win triple crowns

Uva Province Open Badminton Championship

Lochana de Silva and Nadeesha Gayathri clinched triple crowns at the Uva Province Open All Island Badminton Championship conducted by the Uva Provincial Badminton Association under the auspices of the Sri Lanka Badminton on Sunday.

At the S. Thomas’ College Indoor Sports Complex in Bandarawela, Gayathri beat Anjalee Jayasundara in the women’s open final (21-12, 21-12) before teaming up with Kavindika de Silva to defeat Chamya Nirmali and Kethaki Wedamulla 21-12, 21-6 in the doubles final. Gayathri then clinched her third gold when she teamed up with Lochana to get the better of Hansa de Silva and Chamya Nirmali (21-12, 21-9) in the mixed doubles final.

In the men’s finals, Lochana beat Jason Homer (21-18, 18-21, 21-12) and also bagged the men’s doubles title when he teamed up with Rashintha de Silva to beat Diniru Rashmitha and Lahiru Weerasinghe in straight sets (21-16, 22-20) before winning the mixed doubles with Gayathri to complete his triple.

Sri Lanka Badminton President Rohan de Silva, S. Thomas’ College Bandarawela Head Master Rev. Father Christopher Balraj and chief organiser Thilak Jayasiri were the special guests at the awards ceremony.
