Need for positive news
The Island news team should be congratulated on publishing a front-page story (19) titled, “Aussie university awards simultaneous PhDs to SL twins”. The two young identical twin ladies, Nadeesha and Thejani Guneratne, did indeed make history in the world and it really was ground-breaking news. Our very best wishes to them too, as they are indeed very special. The accompanying lovely picture that was published, as depicted above, was absolutely superb as an image worth over a thousand words. It would definitely be a source of intense inspiration to the young people of Sri Lanka.
This effort was the epitome of the highest pinnacles of reporting in journalism. It was a piece of news that warmed the cockles of the hearts of many a Sri Lankan. It was an acknowledgement of an achievement that was mind-boggling and deserved the highlighting that was provided on the front page of your publication.
At a time of intense and intolerable stress in our beautiful Motherland, we are constantly bombarded by images of the ugly mugs of all kinds of so-called legislators from an edifice around the Diyawanna Oya; a set of confirmed crooks, together with their loud-mouthed, meaningless and verbose rhetoric reported in all print media. They are totally meaningless and deserve to be thrown into a waste bin rather than be reported in the national newspapers. Just look at the current status of our country; a glowing spectacle of the misdeeds of these very same worthies.
Please may I suggest that you use the good offices of your position to bring us real news rather than the garbage that clutter most of the print media, especially the government-sponsored ones, of our country? Please do try and restrict such utter rubbish to under ten per cent of your precious publishing space. I am sure that the circulation of your publication would go up in leaps and bounds as well if such an initiative is undertaken.
