Minister Sabry praises India for being first country to support Lanka’s debt restructuring
India was the first country to support Sri Lanka’s debt restructuring plans by notifying its financial assurances to the IMF, Foreign Affairs Minister Mohamed Ali Sabry said yesterday, in Colombo, at the joint press conference with his Indian counterpart, S. Jaishankar.
“To receive IMF assistance we needed the timely assurances of our creditors, India has extended its hand and has become the first country to support our debt restructuring plans,” he said.
Sabry also thanked India for demonstrating confidence and solidarity with Sri Lanka and said several agreements, to support social economic development infrastructure in education, health and community development, were signed yesterday morning.
“India has taken over the Chairmanship of G 20. We note this with respect and India has infused the global south with pride,” he said. (RK)
