Government refuses to scrap Independence Day celebrations
The Government today asserted that it will not scrap the Independence Day celebrations to be staged in Sri Lanka.
Cabinet Spokesman Bandula Gunawardena said that despite the economic issues faced by the country, Independence Day celebrations will go ahead.
There have been wide calls for the Independence Day celebrations to be cancelled this year owing to the economic crisis.
Gunawardena said that certain Government expenses cannot be slashed, like payments to conduct the operations of Parliament and the judiciary.
“Since this is our 75th Independence Day, the celebrations must be held,”
He said that the expenses for the Independence Day celebrations are much less than the funds allocated for other activities.
The Minister said that Sri Lanka is spoken of in many countries on its Independence Day. (Colombo Gazette)
