State Minister of Women and Children’s Affairs Geetha Kumarasinghe says she is waiting to see how President Ranil Wickremesinghe will act when the presidential election 2024 is officially announced before declaring her political allegiance to anyone.

“I think it’s too early to say whose candidacy I would support. There are two reasons for this. Firstly, I don’t see a huge interest right now among the people about going for an election and changing the government. Secondly, despite the fact that there is a semblance of stability in the country, the masses are still under the pressure of socio-economic problems and are more keen to have their day-to-day issues resolved rather than going to polling stations”.

She made this remark on Sirasa TV last week while participating in a political chat show.

When asked whether she would support President Ranil Wickremesinghe, or another candidate, possibly fielded by Podu Jana Peramuna – the party she represents – the State Minister said she would first wait and see how President Wickremesinghe would act at this point of time and then decide on what she would do.

“It is not still clear how the President would act at the next presidential election.  So, I would rather wait and see, “she said.

When asked about her allegiance to Podu Jana Peramuna and its leaders, she said that she wouldn’t have blind faith in anyone. “For me what is important is having and pursuing a proper plan to get the country out of its economic crisis. Secondly, for me what is important is creating a conducive environment for women and children to live in a society free from violence and rights infringements. However, I must say that I wouldn’t support anyone who would treat me with condescension.”
