Sri Lanka was routed by India by a massive 302 runs shot out for 55 in 19.4 overs in a repeat performance of their dismal Asia Cup final defeat at home as India romped to the semi-finals of the world cup on the fourth biggest ODI win in unbeaten run of seven wins with pace bowler Mohammed Shami’s Player of the Match 5 for 18 making him India’s highest wicket in world cups at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium on Thursday.

Sri Lanka’s top five folded like butterflies before the awesome India pace attack with Pathum Nissanka and Dimuth Karunaratne leg before wicket to Jasprit Bumrah for ducks, Sadeera Samarawickrama caught Eyer bowled Mohammed Siraj 0, Kusal Mendis bowled Siraj 1, Charith Asalanka and caught Jadeja bowled Mohammed Shami 1. Dushan Hemantha was dismissed by Shami for a duck with Angelo Mathews eighth out bowled by Shami for 12.

India, put into bat in that loss, recovered from the second ball dismissal of skipper Rohit Sharma whose off stump was sent cartwheeling by Dilshan Madushanka off his second delivery for 4 in becoming Sri Lanka’s only bright spot with a maiden 5-wicket take that included the next top three Virat Kohli for 88, Shubman Gill for 92 and Shreyas Iyer 82 in becoming the leading wicket taker in the tournament thus far. Madushanka’s dismissal of Kohli also stilled a highly expectant home crowd that had looked to the superstar breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 49 ODI hundreds. Sri Lanka could have sent back Kohli on 10 had Dushmantha Chameera hung on to a return catch in the sixth over.
