The government was in overdrive to please the MPs who supported it while hoodwinking people with promises, SLPP dissident MP Chandima Weerakkody told Parliament on Monday.

MP Weerakkody said that President Ranil Wickremesinghe had claimed that it had no funds to increase the salaries of state workers and they had to wait until next year. “All these promises are given to hoodwink the people. This is while they issue vehicle permits for the MPs. I have got to know that vehicle permits for MPs have been approved in keeping with a government request. Most people were expecting to import vehicles but the government claimed that could not be done as the country’s foreign exchange reserves were low.
