For using abusive language during Presidential election campaign

President tells Weerawansa let “bygones be bygones”

( September 1, 2015, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) In what is called a dramatic turn of events in the local political arena NFF leader Wimal Weerawansa had tendered an apology to President Maithripala Sirisena when a UPFA delegation met the President yesterday.

Weerawansa had tendered the apology to the President for using abusive language during the Presidential election campaign against him (the President).

According to UPFA sources Weerawansa had tendered an apology to the President, during a discussion at the paget road residence.

The President in turn had told Weerawansa “let bygones be bygones”. Weerawansa, a key speaker of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s campaign in January, was known as the harshest critique of Maithripala Sirisena, who was then the Common Candidate of the opposition.

The NFF leader called on President Sirisena at the latter’s official residence yesterday morning to discuss the future of the UPFA coalition.

Weerawansa arrived at the President’s official residence at about 8.45 am along with UPFA members Dinesh Gunewardene and Vasudeva Nanayakkara.

The meeting took place amidst speculations that the President was considering a dissolution of the UPFA coalition.

At the meeting, Weerawansa had urged the President to refrain from making any such move.

The President in reply to Weerawansa had said that he doesn’t engage in vituperative politics.

Speaking to the media after the meeting Weerawansa had told the media that President Sirisena had agreed to allow the opposition to propose a candidate for the Opposition Leader.

On the concept of a national government Weerawansa had added “We were of the view that a National Government should not be formed as it would be disadvantageous for the UPFA at the forthcoming local polls.

The SLFP Central Committee earlier gave consent to the President to make the final decision on appointing the Opposition Leader.
