Video: Former AG Mayadunne resigns from Parliament

- lankatruth.com

Former Auditor General Sarath Chandra Mayadunne who was appointed to Parliament from the national list of the JVP resigned from his Parliamentrya seat after making a statement.

I never had a plan to be a member of this assembly. When nominations for the general election was to be closed a former Parliamentarian of the JVP asked whether I would consent to be a member of their national list. When I told him of my stand of not sacrificing my freedom and impartiality he said they would help me to maintain my stand and there wouldn’t be any hindrance for that.”

He said, “The people have not been fair by the JVP that urged the government to have an administration free of fraud, corruption and waste and also fielding candidates who had no allegations of fraud or corruption. The people did not give the opportunity for the JVP to make our country one without fraud, corruption and waste. The election results and preferential votes evidently displayed the thinking of the people that frauds, corruption and waste carried out by the two main parties need not be considered as unpardonable crimes. Despite our coming forward to eradicate fraud and corruption the people have not given us the approval to do so. The attempt made by the JVP to get the service of eminent citizens like him has been ignored by the people. People who have approved fraud and corruption have not given approval for us to work against fraud and corruption. The JVP receiving only about 7% of the postal votes is a deep concern. The attempt by the JVP to free state service from fraud and corruption and get them the due rights have been cast aside by state employees. More than 92% of the postal voters have rejected the JVP and there by rejected our service in Parliament.

Despite my wish to serve the people by being a Member of Parliament through the national list, the people have not approved it. The pattern of voting is indeed questionable. Even those eminent candidates from the two main parties have been rejected by the people. He said his decision to resign has not been influenced by the JVP.
