The adoption of the Resolution on Sri Lanka at the United Nations Human Rights Council was a topic of discussion on the local political stage.

Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Mahinda Amaraweera says that President Maithripala Sirisena was able to stop the western influence and the hostility that was leveled at us and was also able to work together with the US, the UK, China, India , Russia and other nations. He went on to state that thereby our war heroes will be protected.

State Minister of Finance Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena stated:

There a committee called the Darusman Committee. When the Darusman Report was being mad,e one of our ministers commenced a Satyagraha campaign. When that Satyagraha campaign was taking place against the UNHRC, the president offered him king coconuts. He said that this will be good for the nation. But we distanced ourselves more from the international community. We compiled the LLRC report. That was accepted internationally. But, we did not implement it. We continued with our journey without taking notice of the international community. Then came the report that affected us. Now, there is no International Investigation. There is only a domestic mechanism. The people need to understand this …”

Meanwhile Mayor of Colombo A.J.M. Muzammil pointed out that though they did not notice it, they dragged this issue forward to a point where the international community was to impose sanctions on us. Today, we do not face any international pressure, he pointed out.

State Minister of National Integration and Reconciliation A. H. M. Fowzie also speaking on the topic said:

If he was not elected as the President, we would have face a bigger issue. After the war it was alleged that injustice was committed and that an international investigation was required and President Maithripala Sirisena was able to avoid all of that.
