German Ambassador warns Lanka on climate change

- newsfirst.lk

The German Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Dr. Jürgen Morhard, has warned that the effects of climate change and pollution are not governed by border restrictions.

Speaking at an event in Colombo on Wednesday to launch the Sri Lankan Civil Society Climate Action Plan, Morhard pointed out that Sri Lanka had not seen a natural disaster of size and scope as other countries in the world.

However, he warned that this did not mean Sri Lanka was isolated from climate change, pointing out that several roads had to be closed in the recent past due to excessive rainfall and the consequent flooding.

The Civil Society Climate Action Plan was launched by the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Colombo together with the Centre for Environmental Justice.

The launch comes of the heels of the annual Conference of Parties (COP 21) also known as the 2015 Paris Climate Conference.

It will be the first time, in over 20 years of UN negotiations, to attempt to seal a legally binding and universal agreement on climate, with the aim of keeping global warming below 2°C.
