President attends National Drug Prevention Programme in Maharagama NYSC
The fourth leg of the National Drug Prevention Programme titled A Drug-Free Nation, took place on Tuesday, centreing the Colombo District. The event, presided over by President Maithripala Sirisena, took place at the National Youth Services Council in Maharagama.
Chairman of the Teetotallers’ Assembly, Venerable Dr. Ittepane Dhammalankara Thero of the Kotte Kalyani Samagri temple, the Maha Sangha and ministers as well as MPs, were present for this occasion. The pledge for the National Drug Prevention Programme was also made as the event.
“We have to enter this battle because, the government had given legal permission for this,” said President Sirisena, addressing the event. He further stated that drugs deemed illegal have entered society in a colossal manner and went on to state that this is seen as a challenge everyone has to face.
He added that this national programme is underway in order to create a healthy country, a better economy and better life for all those living in the country
District Secretary Sunil Kannangara presented the president with the Colombo District Plan on Drug Prevention. Persons who worked towards the prevention of drugs were also presented with mementos at the event.
