A special investigation has been commenced on evidence given by UNP Parliamentarian Sandith Samarasinghe who was assaulted during a clash in Parliament. Mr. Samarasinghe was admitted to Colombo National Hospital with head and other injuries.

It is reported that Deputy Minister Palitha Thevarapperuma and UPFA Parliamentarian from Kegalle District Prasanna Ranaweera could be taken into custody regarding the incident.

The police, with the permission from the Speaker Karu Jayasuriya, have recorded statements from three parliamentarians and the scene was inspected and information recorded.

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya is to hand over a report on the incident to police today (5th) and it is stated that police will ask permission to arrest several MPs as the injured is still in hospital.

Meanwhile, the committee appointed by the Speaker to go into the incident has emphasized that maximum action should be taken against Deputy Minister Palitha Thevarapperuma and UPFA Parliamentarian.

At a media briefing held yesterday the Treasurer of the SLFP Parliamentarian S.B. Dissanayaka had said the two MPs could be removed from Parliamentarian if they are proved guilty.
