PM issues warning to plantation companies who base trade solely on profit

- newsfirst.lk

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe issued a warning to companies in the plantation industries who ply their trade solely based on profit. The Prime Minister expressed these views while addressing a promotion campaign of the United National Party’s membership in the Hatton town.

“When I go overseas I am told that the Sinhalese are racists,  and I respond by saying no, the Sinhalese are not racist, it is just a handful that are”, said the Premier

He pointed out that a majority of the parliamentarians in the Nuwara Eliya District are Tamil and there is diverse community of Sinhalese, Tamils and Muslims who live here – and Nuwara Eliya is the perfect district that defines Sri Lanka’s identity.

“Today we are made to give special thought to companies in the plantation sector”,  he said and further added that some of them function properly while the others do not. And some plantation companies say that their first priority is their shareholders and they only focus on the profit of their shareholders and the profit of their management. But the ownership of this land does not belong to their ancestors, it belongs to the people so there is need to develop the plantations industry from scratch and if this happens, it would not matter if the company is local or international, land ownership would be given only in return that this industry would develop.

Meanwhile, Minister of Hill Country New Villages, Infrastructure and Community Development, Palani Digambaram,  speaking at the event charged:”In the past, we could not hold meetings”.

He further added that leaders who showed off their strength are now in India. He said that there are two of them in parliament, when and one of them takes leave, the other takes leave – and leaves the country and they were all in the previous government.

“I was there too, however, these demons, these former ministers, did not even let me travel on the road in the past”, said Minister Digambaram
