Land collapses at Broadland Hydro-Power Project for second time

- newsfirst.lk

The portion of land on top of a tunnel system belonging to the Broadland Hydro-Power Project sunk for a second time on Tuesday night.

The Broadland Hydro-Power Plant Project was launched in 2013 to generate electricity by obstructing the Kelani River that flows through Kithulgala at Polpitiya.

The underground tunnels of the project that run through the Polpitiya village has given rise to a number of issues.A portion of land on top of the tunnel system sunk in on August 7. The project officials took measures to fill the land up.A backhoe machine and a lorry have been stuck inside the sinkhole. A group who were at the location obstructed the News1st correspondent from obtaining footage of the sinkhole.

Project Director, Dr. Kamal Nimalsiri  stated that the weak nature of the earth at the location had been identified before. He added that steps had been taken to relocate the people who lived in the area.

The eco-system and the residents of the Makuluella area in Bandarawela were affected in a similar manner, last January, by the Uma Oya Multi Purpose Project.

The issue at the location arose when there was a leak in the tunnel system that was constructed to carry the excess water of the Dayaramba Reservoir to the underground power plant in the Karandagolla area. The wells in the area that were filled with water dried up right before the eyes of the residents and the Heel Oya too suffered a similar fate.
