However, on Sunday, September 11,  the Gammadda 100-day initiative, was able to commence the process of bringing an end to this unfortunate identity marker of these people,  which has spanned nearly three generations.

A pooja ceremony was held in Kahakurullanpelessa today.

The ceremony was attended by students of the Kahakurullanpelessa Primary School.

Students expressed their delight with the realization that they and 850 other families in surrounding villages will receive access to clean drinking water.

The Presidential Task Force on Prevention of Chronic Kidney Disease and the Sri Lanka Navy have joined hands with the Gammadda 100 Day Initiative in its efforts to implement this clean drinking water project.

The water project to install a Reverse Osmosis Plant centering the Kahakurullan Pelessa Primary School was declared open today under the auspices of Deputy Area Commander of the South Eastern Naval Area, Commodore S.P. Kurukulasuriya and Captain Priyankara Dissanayake.

The efforts of the News 1st Gammadda Programme and the Sri Lanka Navy to prevent the spread of kidney disease, which has arisen due to the long standing water crisis,  was highly commended by the locals.
