Standard Chartered Bank presents the premier Musicmatters Colombo Festival 2012 on Saturday, 9 June at the Park Street Mews – The Street. The event will showcase contemporary creative musical performances drawing on diverse influences.

Standard Chartered Bank Head of Consumer Banking Sanjay Wijemanne speaking of the sponsorship said, “We are very pleased to be associated with the first presentation of the Musicmatters Colombo Festival. It is an opportunity to showcase young talent and we hope that their music will inspire a true revival and interest in all forms of music. The bank is proud of is association with the arts and facilitating events of this nature.”
Earlier this year, Standard Chartered Bank was the main sponsor of the Colombo Art Biennale and the event to announce the winner of the 2011 Gratiaen Prize in May. The bank’s presentation of the Musicmatters Colombo Festival will allow music enthusiasts to enjoy an evening of ‘alternative’ music drawn from jazz, Sri Lankan ritual music, experimental electronica, singer-songwriter folk music, and psychedelic progressive rock.
The Festival will feature the talent and innovation of local artists such as Sarani Perera (guitar), Eshantha Peiris (keyboard), Sumudi Suraweera (drums), as well as visiting musicians from Greece (James Wylie – saxophone), Norway (Nils Christian Fossdal, Mattis Myrland, Hans Martin Austestad – voices) and Australasia (Natasha Nathanielsz – harp, Isaac Smith – double bass), and promises be one long night of music that will be – by definition – out of the ordinary.

The musical presentations will be the performers’ attempt to detach their ‘music’ from the conventional, in order to free the musician to express his/her unrestricted artistic potential. This is music that can be appreciated, not necessarily for its surface appeal, but for its originality, raw beauty and spontaneous manipulation of familiar sounds in unexpected ways. The Musicmatters Colombo Festival 2012 presented by Standard Charted Bank is an event which will showcase contemporary creative musical performances.
Musicmatters Colombo Festival 2012 happens on Saturday, 9 June (6 p.m. onwards) at Park Street Mews – The Street. Tickets priced at Rs. 500 are available at Yamaha Music Centre, Park Street Mews, www.ticketslk.com and Musicmatters.
