Individual allegedly assaulted by police admitted to Monaragala hospital

An individual who was allegedly assaulted by the police has been admitted to the Monaragala General Hospital.

Our correspondent stated that the victim was initially admitted to the Siyambalanduwa Base Hospital and later transferred to Monaragala.

The individual who was alleged to have been assaulted by the police was identified as W.M. Pradeep Suranga, a 26-year-old and a resident of Hulang-Nuge area in Pottuvil.

When News 1st inquired into the matter from the Pottuvil Police, they stated that the individual was arrested on suspicion of being involved in a robbery of a store at around 10 p.m. on July 23. The police added that these was made based on information received from another suspect. They stated that the suspect fled before they were able to escort him to the police station.

The wife of the assaulted individual said:

They came at about 10. They broke down our door and entered our house. Then they assaulted my husband and then we asked who they were. They scolded me as well. They scolded me in filth. Another group came and the took him away in a three-wheeler they were not wearing any uniforms. Four people assaulted him.

Meanwhile, officers from the Pottuvil Police returned to the residence on July 24 morning. This was the situation which occurred on their return. The wife of the victim said:

There is no point tying my husband down and assaulting him in this manner. If some thing happened to him, you’ll will be responsible. Seven persons came to our house intoxicated. Where is my three wheeler? They opened my purse and took the key of the three wheeler. They kicked my husband telling him to get up.

We made inquiries from the police media spokesperson’s office, which stated that the the suspect ran away before he was arrested and the three-wheeler that was suspected to be used in the robbery was taken into custody by the police.

Meanwhile, allegations were leveled that 22-year-old Sujith Perera was assaulted in the Hirana area on July 5 by individuals claiming to be police officers. The victim stated that the he was assaulted after being taken to the Mirihana Police.
