Continuing its drive to broad base the game in the country, the Sri Lanka Golf Union together with Prima Sunrise Bread has found a new venue at Anuradhapura to conduct the Regional Junior Open Golf Championship on 23 and 24 August.
The host club of the tournament this year would be Eagles’ Heritage Golf Course Anuradhapura, newly built by the Sri Lanka Air Force. Such tournaments are conducted to promote the game regionally and in turn be a way to identify talent for representation at national level.
The main sponsor of junior national golf, Prima Sunrise Bread has extended its support to the Sri Lanka Golf Union to sponsor the regional junior open. The tournament will be played over two days and will comprise of three age groups namely; age groups 15-17 years (Gold Division) age groups 11-14 years (Silver Division) and age groups 10 years and under (Bronze Division).
The tournament will be open to both boys and girls under the respective age group categories. We are likely to see the talents of G. Danaranjan fresh from his victory at the Victoria Junior Golf Championship and Lamindu Rainika posing a challenge to much experienced player Prashan Peiris in the gold division. Vinod Weerasinghe and Sathsara Dilshan will provide stiff competition in the silver division. In the most junior category, the bronze division, G. Danushan and T Vikashmay spring a surprise. With over thirty entries so far for the tournament, we are likely to see a high level of golf amongst Sri Lanka’s future hopefuls on these two days.
The Sri Lanka Golf Union Honorary Secretary, Ana Punchihewa is convinced that Sri Lankan’s have the talent to be world class golfers as they have proved in cricket and through these regional events hopes to eventually bring golf into school sports curriculums. “Top cricketers also have been known to become excellent golfers,” said Punchihewa citing Sir Garfield Sobers, the late Tony Greig, Brian Lara and even our own Mahela and Sanga.
