Lafarge, a world leader in building materials, is expanding its partnership with Sri Lankan engineering company Dynamic Technologies, by developing a 4,000-tonne cement silo in the Seychelles.
This will be the seventh international project the two organisations have collaborated on. Dynamic Technologies is no stranger to Lafarge Mahaweli Cement. Dynamic Technologies Managing Director Asoka Dharmawardana, commenting on their longstanding association with the company, says they have practically grown up with Lafarge.

“Our expansion began with Lafarge Mahaweli Cement contracting us to build their cement plant in the Colombo port back in the early 1980s. This provided us with the opportunity to expand locally and that was the beginning of our diversification.
“Now we have successfully moved on to the international arena with our expertise and the use of advanced technology. We greatly appreciate the doors that Lafarge Mahaweli Cement opened for us, in terms of taking our expertise overseas,” he said.
“The trust Lafarge has placed in us has contributed towards our development as a local mechanical engineering service provider. The high quality of service demanded by Lafarge in line with their international standards, required us to engage in advanced technology which gained us the expertise and paved the way for us to break new ground in the building of plants.”
Dynamic Technologies has so far worked with Lafarge in Sudan twice – initially in 2004 for a flat storage capacity and more recently in 2013 to dismantle four steel silos. They worked together on the Lafarge plant in the Maldives in 2000 and recently completed a 4,000-ton cement silo in the Maldives earlier this year. In 2001, Dynamic developed the packing line for Lafarge’s plant in Mayotte.

And the two companies worked together again to develop a 4,000-ton silo in Mayotte earlier this year. The silo for the new plant in the Seychelles will be fabricated in Sri Lanka and shipped to the island. In between they worked with Lafarge Mahaweli Cement in Colombo to replace four silos in 2011-12, and just completed a 4,000-ton silo in August 2014.
Zurich-based Lafarge Cementia’s Technical Performance Manager Arnauld Haemers said that Sri Lankan engineering is coming of age and Lafarge as a world leader in the cement and building materials industry wants to give due recognition to this fact.
“This decision is not merely a logistical one, as Lafarge on an international level is looking for such connections to create synergies in the South Asian region.”
Dynamic Technologies began providing engineering services back in the 1980s and has since evolved into a major player in the world of engineering and construction. They have diversified their business from engineering solutions to fabrication of steel structures, providing equipment for large-scale plants as well as taking on turnkey projects such as the installation of wholly-equipped plants.

“These international projects do not only reflect the potential of our company but also the potential of the country to engage in large-scale construction projects overseas,” says the MD of Dynamic.
As a result of expert knowledge gained over three decades, and the support provided by a global giant such as Lafarge, Dynamic Technologies has now become the premier choice for plant construction, not only overseas but also amongst other cement manufacturers in Sri Lanka. The company has to date built more than four cement plants locally as well as an asbestos sheet manufacturing plant for a Lankan company.
“Lafarge has not only influenced us to enlarge geographically and technologically but has influenced us in acquiring positive health and safety standards in our construction sites and workshops. The compliance with international health and safety standards followed by Lafarge, has contributed towards promoting Dynamic Technologies as a preferred contractor and also helped in our overseas expansion,” Asoka Dharmawardana said.
