Election Chief issues circular prohibiting misuse of government property

Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya issued a special circular to heads of all ministries, departments and corporations to prevent the misuse of government property during the forthcoming Presidential election.

The circular has been sent to ministry secretaries, heads of departments, corporations and other government establishments.

The circular prohibits use of government vehicles, offices and buildings for election campaigns.

The circular states that during the time period the elections are being held, state employee transfers, promotions and appointments should not take place.

It emphasises that the public servants without right to indulge in political activities are prohibited from such activities. A spokesperson of the Elections Commissioner's office stated that the circular was issued based on the authority given to the elections commissioner.

Meanwhile, three candidates have paid deposits for contesting in the Presidential election. Additional Elections Commissioner U.Amaradasa said the Socialist Equality paid deposit yesterday (November 26). Earlier, Okkoma Rajawaru, Okkoma Vasiyo Organisation and Janasetha Front paid deposits for their candidates. Amaradasa said deposits can be paid until December 5 for intending candidates.

The deposit for a recognised political party is Rs 50,000 and for an independent candidate Rs 75,000. The nominations will be accepted from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on December 8. Postal voters should submit their applications before December 4, 2014. The election will be held on January 8, 2015. (/KHPRIU)
