A protest was staged outside the Department of Elections in Rajagiriya yesterday over the failure by the Elections Commissioner to take actions against elections violations.
The protest by opposition members and supporters, called on Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya to ensure a free and fair presidential election. Former Minister and Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) General Secretary Patali Champika Ranawaka, who was among those at the protest, said that everyone should be given equal opportunities during the election process.
He noted that this is the first presidential election which will be held in a fully peaceful environment with no pressure from either terrorists or paramilitaries.
Champika Ranawaka alleged that the military is being used to erect posters in support of President Mahinda Rajapaksa while other state resources have also been used for this purpose. (Colombo Gazette)
