Kandy fly-half Fazil Marija will lead the national Sevens team at the Borneo Rugby Sevens – the first tournament for the year – which will take place in Malaysia from 27 February to 1 March and feature six men’s and eight women’s teams.
The Sri Lankan team will consist of five players from Havelocks, three from Navy and two each from Kandy and CR&FC. Papua New Guinea, Sri Lanka, Singapore, China, Tonga and Hong Kong will feature in the men’s segment while the women’s category will have two groups. China, Hong Kong, Japan and Malaysia will play in Group A while Group B will consist of Samoa, Papua New Guinea, Melbourne and Thailand.
Making a comeback to the Sevens team will be Sajith Saranga and Kanchana Ramanayake, both of whom have proven themselves in the inter-club league to be included in the touring 12. The only surprise selection was Havelocks Assistant Coach Rajeev Perera, who will guide the team in Malaysia. His appointment was not made through the proper channels of the council members at the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU).
