Sri Lanka Participates at International Day in Palestine

The Representative Office of Sri Lanka in the State of Palestine participated at the International Day held on May 11, at the Birzeit University in Palestine, along with a number of other diplomatic missions; such as India, South Africa, Mexico, Korea, Ecuador, Turkey, Japan, Brazil, and European Union.

The  event was organized by the Birzeit University under the theme of “ From Birzeit to the World” in order to promote cultural & educational programmes, ties and interaction at the local, national and international level.

 

The Sri Lankan stall at the event was decorated with National Flags, traditional handcrafts, and rubber and ceramic products, spices, tea and wooden toys from Sri Lanka. Tourism and Tea promotional materials was also provided. Ceylon Tea which is in high demand in Palestine, was  also served at the stall and appreciated by the visitors. Sri Lanka traditional, folk dances and songs were also performed at the event and drew a great deal of attraction and interest by people.

 

The Sri Lanka Representative Office used the event to promote the country as an attractive tourist destination and  also highlighted Sri Lanka’s rich history, its culture, its lush flora and fauna, exotic sandy beaches and warm welcoming and friendly people, to the visitors to the stall.  Members of the business community was given information and encouraged to import Sri Lankan products to Palestine.

 

The President of the Birzeit University Dr. Khalil Hindi thanked Mr. M. Siraj Ahamed, Officer-in-Charge and the Staff of the Representative Office for their active participation at the event at the University.

 

Mr. Bandar Ekanayake, CDA a.i. of  the Sri Lanka Embassy in Israel,  Mr. Micheal Shomale, Hon. Consul of Sri Lanka in Bethlehem, Mr. Mahmoud Abdullah, President of Palestine – Sri Lanka Friendship Society, were among the special guests for the event, that included a  large number of students, travel agents and businessmen from all parts of Palestine.
