INDIANAPOLIS – Their work on the pitch stood out, and for the Indiana Soccer Coaches Association, was more than notable as Warsaw’s Corissa Koontz and NorthWood’s Andre De Freitas were both named All-State.

Warsaw’s Corissa Koontz was named Honorable Mention All-State for girls soccer.

Koontz, a junior for coach Jon Hoover’s Tigers, didn’t compile the video game numbers as some others, but impacted matches in several ways. The Honorable Mention All-State midfielder registered seven goals and eight assists on the campaign, but six of those goals came in the final five matches.

Her two goals helped Warsaw beat Northridge, 4-2, to secure the team’s first undefeated run through the Northern Lakes Conference in nearly 20 years, and she had a hand in all four scores (2 goals, 2 assists) of a 4-2 win over Fort Wayne Wayne in the sectional semis. Her work off the ball, as well as constant attention drawn, opened lanes and opportunities for her teammates, part of the intangible aspect to her game.

De Freitas, a senior for coach Brad Duerksen’s Panthers, on the other hand, had the video game numbers this season. The Second Team All-State honoree had 32 goals and 15 assists for NorthWood, which made its first-ever appearance in the semi-state. De Freitas had hat tricks or more in six contests, and had a two-game stretch where he scored nine total goals against state power Bethany Christian to close the regular season and Lakeland in the first round of the sectional. He registered a point in all but five of NorthWood’s 22 matches.

De Freitas leaves the NorthWood program as the all-time leader in goals, points and single-season goals. De Freitas’ goal output in 2020 tied him for seventh in the state.
