There will be speeches by the Ambassador of Thailand, Mayor Jim Watson and the Founder of Vesak Day in Ottawa and Sirin Chairman, Visita Leelaratna. Through the efforts and collaboration of various inter-cultural groups, the Vesak and Asian Heritage Month festivities will also be attended by the Ottawa community at large. The celebrations will also feature Sanga chanting for World Peace, cultural performances and art displays from Ottawa’s diverse Asian communities.

Asian Heritage Month: Positive contribution to the world community and enhance children's heritage awareness. The Sirin Foundation, founded by Visita Leelaratna, is dedicated to making a different in the lives of the less fortunate in Sri Lanka, especially through education. The Sirin Research Centre, which is associated with the Sirin Foundation, is an organization that works to foster knowledge and understanding between Canadians and the Sri Lankan people. It works to raise the level of public understanding with regard to diversity and multiculturalism and tries to reduce discrimination.

Iskotew Lodge welcomes Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal staff from across Health Canada as well as other public servants and community members for its various spiritually-related activities. Tragedy struck a young Sri Lankan-Canadian family from Toronto, last Sunday morning. Jayantha Neil Wijeratne, 49, his wife Antonette, 50, and only daughter Eleesha, 16, were returning home from a road trip and holiday to Florida when a suspected drunk driver going the wrong way on Highway 427 slammed head-on into their Dodge mini-van killing father and daughter.

As part of Asian Heritage Month festivities, The Honourable Gordon O'Connor, Chief Government Whip and Minister of State and Visita Leelaratna, founder and Chairman of Sirin, participated in the opening of the Sirin Art Exhibition on May 26, 2012 at Lion Dick Brûlé Community Centre, in Kanata. Minister Gordon O'Connor represented the Government of Canada and spoke to members of the community about the Canadian values and importance of connecting with Canadians from all parts of the world.

Bhante Kovida grew up on the tropical island of Jamaica, West Indies, of Chinese descent. He immigrated to Canada, studied for a science degree, then traveled overland from Europe to India and Nepal (via Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan) during 1974-1975, where he began the study of Indian history and culture, Hatha Yoga and meditation, classical Indian music, and Buddhism.
