Intoxicants found in shops near leading Galle school

The National Anti-Drug Drive, a door-to-door awareness campaign organised by News 1st, Sirasa and Shakthi aimed at rallying the people to create a drug free nation, is underway in several areas of the Southern Province.

The National Dangerous Drugs Control Board, News 1st, Sirasa and Shakthi, toured the Southern Province and came across a number of school children who provided valuable information.

Following is the conversation News 1st had with the students:

A: You get intoxicated?

Q: What do you mean. Do other students take it?

A: Yes they consume it.

Q: Do they sell this in the canteen?

A:You can but it from a shop close to the area.

Q: What happens when you consume it?

A: You get intoxicated.

Q: Do you feel dizzy when you take it?.

Q: No. You feel intoxicated.

Based on this information, officers of the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board from the Galle District, Galle Consumer Affairs Authority together with the Police inspected several shops in the Weliwatta area on Monday, July 6. During the raid, a number of substances suspected of being used as intoxicants were found from shops, which were found largely in close proximity to a leading school in the area.

Officers of the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board stated that they seized several items such as small bottles that appear to contain a type of intoxicant and a type of coffee suspected to have a mixture of intoxicants.

Meanwhile, several drug raids continue to be carried out across the country. One such raid lead to the arrest of a woman along with heroin in her possession in the Point Pedro area. According to the Police, 280 grammes of heroin worth Rs. 5 million were found in her possession. The suspect, who was produced before court on July 6, was remanded until July 20.
