Authorities set up free Wi-Fi facility in Southern Indian zoo

Inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s dream of a ‘Digital India’, a zoo in southern Hyderabad city is facilitating free Wi-Fi for the people who can click pictures with the animals and post it online instantly.

Thought the service is partly operational in Nehru Zoological Park, it will take two to three months to enable wi-fi in the entire zoo if it is found not to be harmful for the animals.

The visitors to the zoo on Sunday (July 26) seemed excited to avail free internet facility.

“It is important for people. They can use Wi-Fi, take picture with animals and send it to friends right away. It is important for India to start such services. Now, the telecom has increased in India. There are many companies like Airtel and Vodafone. They are improving rapidly. I hope the best for Hyderabad for this service,” said a visitor, Rashil.

The Zoo has a large variety of animals like Asiatic lions, royal Bengal tigers, panthers, Indian rhino, bears, deer, antelopes, birds and reptiles.

Besides high speed public Wi-Fi, zoo officials are also planning other services like Automated Teller Machine (ATM) and e-services to let visitors enjoy their trip and work simultaneously.

“Sometimes we may have to attend to some works. So after coming to zoo also, they can do those works. This service enables them to have some mental stability and they can visit the zoo in a comfort zone,” said the curator of the zoo, G. Ravi.

The federal government’s push for technology, which plans to provide electronic governance and universal phone connectivity across the country, aims to bridge India’s digital divide, bringing in large investments in technology manufacturing.

India had just a little over 100 million broadband subscribers at the end of April, out of a population of close to 1.3 billion, according to the sector regulator, which considers Internet connections with minimum download speeds of 512 kbps.

A telecom ministry panel, by comparison, said in March that it wants the digital push to establish affordable broadband connectivity of 2 Mbps to 20 Mbps “for all households” by 2017.
