Dambulla Vikings Skipper Dasun Shanaka once again starred in a typical captain’s role leading from the front with a 34-ball 56-run top score in defeating Colombo Kings by 28 runs in the first of the two 2020 Lanka Premier Leage Day-Night matches at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Stadium, Sooriyawewa, Hambantota on Tuesday. His Player of the Match innings contained 4 sixes and 3 boundaries. The 2 points gave Dambulla Vikings an overall 4 points from 3 matches occupying 3rd place with net run rate of 0.685, behind Colombo Kings whose maiden loss in the tournament saw them in 2nd place with 4 points from 3 games with net run rate of 0.133.  Dambulla Vikings having posted 175 for 9 in the allotted 20 overs, shot out Colombo Kings for 147 in 18.4 overs.

Having taken first lease on winning the toss, Shanaka took strike with his side shakily placed on 84 for 4 wickets just past the halfway mark of 10.3 overs, and added 38 runs with Angelo Perera (21) for the fifth wicket in 4.2 overs and a further 29 with Anwar Ali whose contribution was just 2 in the next 17 deliveries and had taken the total to 162 when he exited in the last delivery of the 19th over caught by Andre Russel off Isuru Udana. Due credit to Upul Tharanga who upfront made 25 off 24 hitting 3 boundaries and a six in a 71-ball repair job for the third wicket with Patel after the side had lost Niroshan Dickwella for 1 and Paul Sterling for 1 with the side reeling on 2 for 3.Andre Russel turned his arm collecting 3 wickets for 18 off just 2 overs, Isuru Udana 3 for 25 and Dushmantha Chameera 2 for 27.

Colombo Kings got off to a bad start losing Dinesh Chandimal for a duck caught and bowled by Samit Patel to the very first delivery of the innings, and precipitated further to 2 for 11 when Thikshila de Silva was removed by Kasun Rajitha off the fourth delivery of the second over caught by Sterling for 5. Skipper Angelo Mathews added 29 runs with Laurie Evans for the third wicket but a big score was yet to come in the tournament from him when he fell for 11 to Anwar Ali who had him held by Pushpakumara. His 14-ball knock contained 2 boundaries, and with the total 40 for 4 off 5.3 deliveries, Colombo Kings caved in with Evans, who continued to play a positive upfront opener’s role not finding the desired support in a virtual lone effort. He was sixth out with the total 95 after 13 overs. The next best individual score of 17 by Dushmantha Chameers reflected the failure of the top order batting as Colombo Kings tasted their first tournament defeat. Anwar Ali, P.M. Pushpakumara and S.R. Patel took 2 wickets apiece.
