Sri Lanka not blocked by anyone from importing oil from any country: Minister
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka has not been blocked from buying all from any country Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera said as the country started discussions to purchase oil from Russia.
The US and European nations are reducing their purchases of oil and natural gas from Russia after President Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine, though no formal sanctions have been imposed on energy exports.
“We are looking to purchase cheaper oil and no country is blocking us from purchasing fuel or oil from any other country,” Minister Wijesekera told reporters on May 24.
The president has requested in writing from several countries including Russia to buy oil.
This week Sri Lanka started refining a 90,000 metric tonne shipment of Siberian light crude bought from the international market. (Colombo/May29/2022)
