US asserts need to ensure protests in Sri Lanka are peaceful
The United States (US) has asserted the need to ensure protests in Sri Lanka are peaceful.
The US Ambassador to Sri Lanka Julie Chung tweeted saying violence is not an answer.
“If you are going to protest, please do so peacefully. And reminding military & police to grant peaceful protesters the space and security to do so. Chaos & force will not fix the economy or bring the political stability that Sri Lankans need right now,” she said.
Her tweet comes as several protests began in and around Colombo today.
The protests were being staged to coincide with a mass protest set to take place in Colombo tomorrow (Saturday).
The protest at Galle Face tomorrow will mark three months since the campaign began at Galle Face to force President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to resign. (Colombo Gazette)
