SC construction firm suspends operations
A South Carolina builder has become one of the latest victims of the troubled economy.
The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports that Malphrus Construction is suspending operations. Malphrus started 70 years ago and became one of the largest contractors in the Southeast.A company statement says the suspension is due in part to the economic downturn and the state of the construction industry. The statement said if things improve, the company could reconsider. The company says it will finish its existing contracts. At one point Malphrus employed 1,000 workers, but that number has dropped sharply in the past two years and it now only has about 50 employees.
