Video: SC orders police to pay compensation to JVP
Supreme Court ordered the IGP today (6th) to pay Rs.50,000 to two members of the JVP who were arrested in Dematagoda area while pasting posters. The two JVP members were pasting posters on 12th January, 2009 with the slogan “Stop media repression by the government & establish democracy” when they were arrested stating they were pasting an illegal poster that insults the government. The JVP filed a case in Supreme Court stating the arrest was a violation of their fundamental rights.
Supreme Court stated that the arrest was a violation of clause13.1 of the Constitution.
The OIC of Nugegoda Police Station, a constable of the same station and the IGP were named as respondents.
