An adjournment motion debate on imposing the death penalty on crimes against the children took place in Parliament on Tuesday.

The proposal in this regard was made by UNP MP Hirunika Premachandra.

Speaking at the parliament, MP Hirunika Premachandra said that there is a provision for an accused to proceed to seek the assistance of the Supreme Court to prove his or innocence .

She further stated that thereby everyone in the parliament has a responsibility to think, if this incident happened to that child, would it not happen to yours.

Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Social Welfare and Empowerment Ranjan Ramanayake, expressing his views said that the victims are less than five years old and they cannot even eat or dress alone. Who will speak of their human rights, queried Deputy Minister Ramanayake.

Minister of Housing and Construction Sajith Premadasa, speaking on this topic noted that he works in favour of death penalty. He further stated that if one says that the death penalty is being used to prevent crimes, that is not accurate.

State Minister of Urban Planning and Water Supply Sudarshani Fernandopulle commenting on this issue said that she believes that the gallows need to be in operation for some time, and dangerous criminals and those who commit crimes against children and women should be given this punishment.
